Department of Educational and Social Services East Ayrshire

The Department of Educational and Social Services works with Scottish Ministries to develop and implement policy relating to education for young people aged 3-18 years. It supports local authorities and schools to provide education for young people which meets their talents and enables them to reach their full potential.

Curriculum policy includes the development of programmes to integrate pupils and parents with an immigration background and/or with a low schooling profile into school life.

Scotland has around 2,500 primary schools, providing education from age 5-12, and 600 secondary schools providing education for 12-18 years. There are 32 local authorities in Scotland which oversee the education of young people in their areas in line with Ministerial directions and objectives, and legislative responsibilities.
